The thing about public speaking

One of the things we’ve enjoyed at LovIT Technologies this year is the chance to get out on the conference circuit and talk about how effective communication can support operational excellence in your business.

Many people fear public speaking but once you conquer that fear there are many positives to getting on stage other than the opportunity to promote your business.

These positives include

  1. Questioning some of the ideas that you take for granted and doing further research on the industry you’re in. The world is constantly evolving, whether that’s how people interact with each other or the latest research performed on customer behaviour. There’s always something new to learn but our hectic lives often prevent us from taking time out to question and possibly reconfirm some of the truths we hold dear.

  2. I was once told by a fantastic public speaker that all presentations should tell a story. Tell people what you’re going say, create an environment in which to tell the story by stating the problem or current situation, state your thoughts on this and possible solutions and then state again what you’ve told them in a series of take aways. People relate to stories rather than boring them with slide after slide of detail. Great communication is what’s heard not what’s said.

  3. People will remember how you make them feel long after they’ve forgotten what you said. Before we give a talk at a conference we discuss the main issues for the people in the room and how we can relate what we’re talking about to those issues. This helps us to better understand our customers and create an emotional attachment between what we’re saying and how people are feeling.

  4. Following every presentation we’ve had great conversations with people in the crowd about what we’ve said and how it relates to them. People often say that feedback is the breakfast of champions and as a tech start up we truly believe feedback is a gift. It helps to shape our roadmap and alter our thinking on how we go to market with our product.

To those people who have taken time out of their busy days to listen to us we’re truly grateful and for those that haven’t seen us yet we hope to see you in the future.
